What to Plant in August
August might feel like the tail end of summer, but there’s still plenty you can plant in your Newburgh garden! Whether you’re working with a few containers or a full backyard bed, now’s the time to sow seeds for quick-growing crops and cool-weather favorites.
Here’s what to plant this month:
Leafy Greens
Spinach, kale, collards, arugula, and lettuces all love cooler weather. Plant them now for a fall harvest!
Root Veggies
Carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips grow well when planted in August. Make sure the soil is loose and well-watered.
Garlic (for fall)
Plan ahead! Garlic goes in the ground later (October), but it’s a good time to buy your seed garlic now before it sells out.
Other Cool-Weather Crops
Broccoli, cabbage, and Swiss chard can be started from seedlings if you can find them at a local nursery or farmers’ market.
Herbs
Cilantro, dill, and parsley can be planted now for a fresh fall harvest.
Tips for Success
Water regularly—August can still be hot and dry.
Add mulch to keep the soil cool and moist.
Look for "fast-growing" or "early" varieties for a better fall harvest.
