Newburgh Urban Farm and Food Initiative's Composting Expo

March 31, 2023

Did you know that every year, 119 Billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States? It amounts to about 40% of our total food in the U.S.!

This food can be saved for eating or disposed of to help our environment while nourishing the soil for future food to be grown. Learn more about composting and the sustainability of food waste from our Composting Expo, which featured presentations on the benefits of Food Scraps composting and how it can be implemented on various scales and in various settings in Orange County. Featured guest speakers include representatives from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Program, Newburgh Free Academy Zero Waste Club, Sustainable Warwick, Grow Local Greenwood Lake, and Newburgh Urban Farm and Food Initiative (NUFFI). There will also be a Q&A and a tour of Newburgh Urban Farm and Food Initiative’s composting site at the conclusion of the presentation.

We were joined by the Orange County DPW, Division of Environmental Facilities and Services (OCDPW DEFS), as well as local community organizations, schools, and businesses in promoting local Food Scraps composting at the Orange County Food Security & Sustainability Initiative Composting Expo at Downing Park Urban Farm.
