Newburgh Farm and Food Initiative Programs
NUFFI is committed to creating opportunities for community gardens to flourish. From providing technical assistance and supplies to soil and seedlings, NUFFI has actively supported the success of 11 community gardens in the City of Newburgh. If your neighborhood would like a community garden, contact infoNUFFI@gmail.com for more information.
Food Access for Greater Food Security & Health
To address issues of both food waste and food insecurity in the City of Newburgh, NUFFI has a simple system: we collect excess produce from local farms, community gardens, and residents and redistribute it to food assistance programs, pantries, and other food access groups. Everyone has a right to enjoy delicious locally-grown food and NUFFI is committed to making sure our community has the access.
To find out how you can help end hunger in Newburgh by donating your excess produce, check out the Newburgh Citywide Produce Donation Program.
Youth Education Programs
In collaboration with Our Core, NUFFI provides high school students in Newburgh the opportunity to learn about urban agriculture at the Downing Park Urban Farm.
Participants gain skills that will help them become entrepreneurs, community leaders and innovators. As shared on the Our Core website, “This will ensure their ability to make a difference in our community by addressing the unique needs of urban growers, or combatting nutritional and environmental effects of poverty by educating and influencing neighbors and political entities regarding growing food and caring for the Earth.”
Additionally, NUFFI encourages all kids to get involved on the farm. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about urban agriculture at the DPUF, contact infoNUFFI@gmail.com.
Due to COVID-19, workshops have been modified to meet standard safety requirements. Please keep up with our Facebook and Instagram for updates and upcoming events.
NUFFI is proud to provide educational workshops to help residents plant their own gardens, prepare fresh food. Past workshops have included: herbalism, making salves, beekeeping, DIY milk-crate gardens, composting, and pickling. No sign-up necessary; just stay up-to-date with our Facebook and Instagram and show up ready to learn!
